ANIMAL QUALITIES

This series of drawings came about in response to the beastly horrors described in Dante’s Paradiso, as well as the monsters depicted in many old paintings with various animal body parts to make them more horrifying. Researching the Seven Deadly Sins, I saw that the sins were associated with different animals: the toad and avarice, the snake and envy, the snail and sloth, etc - whereas the virtues were not associated with animals. I wanted to reverse this human-centric perspective that demonized the animal kingdom and glorified humans. And so these drawings emerged - starting with the Seven Virtues and adding on from there. May we move toward a post-human world view that deeply admires the flora and fauna of our planet. All drawings are 6”x9”
